IRIX

I've been a fan of MIPS based SGI machines running IRIX since the early 90s. It started to develop into a serious addiction when I finally got my first own SGI machine (an only Indy) in 1998. That machine was followed by an Indigo2 Impact in 2000 and an Octane (upgraded to Octane2 level over the years) in 2001. Starting with the Indigo2 I was using IRIX as my main desktop OS pretty exclusively (coming from Linux). The Octane was finally replaced by a Fuel in 2005. Some older pictures of the Fuel can be found in the gallery.

For various practical reasons I finally stopped using IRIX as my main OS in 2007. However, i'm still keeping the Fuel around as a hobbyist machine, for working on Nekoware and to drive the DLT tape drive I use for weekly backups (as its the last SCSI based machine I still use regularly).

Nekoware

Nekoware is an extensive distribution of open source software compiled and packaged for IRIX by the members of the Nekochan community. I started to actively participate in nekoware in 2004 (contributing over 80 packages over time) and still try to do so on a pseudo-regular basis. You can find Nekoware here.

IRIX video formats

I've compiled quite a few IRIX video format definitions (vfo) for various people and various machine/display combinations using the SGI video format compiler (vfc) over the years. You can find those here (use those at your own risk!).

Archived content

There used to be a separate IRIX section on this website before I decided to combine the various sections into one UNIX section. You can find the archived SGI section here.

Linux

I'm currently using Linux (Debian) as my main OS both on the Desktop (currently a Lenovo ThinkPad T61) and on my home server (currently an IBM ThinkCentre S50). I'll add Linux specific content to this section if there is anything worthwile.. ;-)

FreeBSD

I used FreeBSD 7 as my main OS for about a year after moving away from IRIX and before moving on to Linux for various reasons last year. See here for some old FreeBSD specific content (essentially just some notes about undervolting the Pentium M CPU in a ThinkPad T40 running FreeBSD).
